Sometimes, however, it reminds you that you are in the Mediterranean ways of the beloved, especially the song. If you’ve ever read a Tolkien book, you know that it only took the man a few pages before he felt the urge to write too much, and I love how much tribute Return to Moria left him.
While you mine all mine, your dwarf sings songs from a vast library of light songs. You will get drunk with your companions, you will all start dancing, and sing an epic ballad about the history of your people. And at the most important events in history, you sing deeply moving songs, full of tradition, full of heart. That is, if you are not interrupted by the sudden appearance of goblins and orcs trying to kill you in the middle of a musical number, as I have been many times.
The main thing that gets The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria right is its almost rhythmic pattern of collecting better and better resources to use for your growing base building. This loop of deeper and deeper exploration into a dangerous, monstrous mine can be fun as you collect resources and immerse yourself in your character.
While you may initially attack with dusty iron and steel, you’ll soon find yourself overwhelmed by enemies further down in the darkness, and that’s where the fun lies. You need to acquire rarer resources, increase equipment, and improve basic housing to make things easier, like the necessary stack full of beer to keep your spirits up.
It’s easy to get lost in the constant grind as you strive for that last shiny thing that will take you to the next stage of your journey. This loop will be very familiar to anyone who was late in Minecraft or killed a giant spider in Grounded. So we’re not exploring new territory here, but it’s very important that The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria at least refreshes this territory properly.
The Verdict
As a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and survival games, I was drawn to the idea of being able to enter a genre I already know and love, with the rich history of Middle Earth to draw me in. (like a group of friends), but it’s disappointing to see such a promising concept make more than a barely accessible impression of better games.
The combat is boring and repetitive, due to the enemy types and the dead AI, and the limited mining options or the freedom to build colonies is a wet blanket on the creativity, which is usually the selling point of the genre. Add to that the crude technical performance and it becomes difficult for The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, even for my Tolkien colleagues. It’s a decent game here somewhere, thanks to the development level.
